John Cottle - Company Director
John Cottle is a highly respected figure in New Zealand’s equestrian industry, known not only for his illustrious riding career but also for his extensive expertise in arena construction. As a two-time Olympian, World Cup Finalist, and World Championship competitor, John has spent decades at the highest levels of the sport, both as a rider and coach.
Beyond his competitive achievements, John has been designing and building equestrian arenas for many years, gaining an in-depth understanding of what it takes to create world-class riding surfaces. His first-hand experience as a top-level competitor gives him a unique insight into the demands of both horses and riders, ensuring that every Andrews Bowen NZ surface is designed with performance, safety, and longevity in mind.
John’s unrivaled knowledge of arena construction, combined with his lifelong passion for the sport, has earned him the trust of riders, trainers, and equestrian facility owners across New Zealand. His commitment to excellence, quality, and innovation continues to shape Andrews Bowen NZ as a leader in equestrian surface technology and arena construction.
James Cottle - Company Director
James Cottle serves as Director and Project Manager at Andrews Bowen NZ. With a lifelong background in the equine industry, he has competed in major national and international competitions, securing the Young Rider Series title and captaining Young Rider teams touring Australia. He has also competed in France and Canada, gaining valuable experience in high-level show jumping.
Alongside his equestrian background, James has an extensive career in construction, having worked in both hands-on and management roles for over a decade. In December 204, he returned from Europe, where he worked as a project manager, bringing a wealth of expertise in construction and equestrian facility development to the Andrews Bowen NZ team.

John Cottle has witnessed firsthand how advancements in arena surface technology have transformed performance and horse safety worldwide. Recognizing that New Zealand was falling behind, he sought to bring the world’s best footing solutions to local riders.
One of the most compelling studies on equestrian surfaces was conducted by Professor Lars Roepstorff, who scientifically assessed the Andrews Bowen surface used at the London 2012 Olympics.
His research confirmed that it was among the most consistent and advanced surfaces he had ever tested, offering optimal firmness, elasticity, shock absorption, and grip—all essential factors in reducing the risk of injury and improving performance.
Impressed by Andrews Bowen’s commitment to continuous innovation, John reached out to the company to explore the possibility of bringing their proven technology to New Zealand.
Andrews Bowen, founded by David Andrews and Simon Bowen, has deep roots in the equestrian world. Their reputation for research-driven development, including the creation of Equimulsion, an environmentally friendly wax-based alternative to watering, further reinforced their position as industry leaders.
Through this partnership, Andrews Bowen NZ provides tailored arena surfaces designed to suit New Zealand conditions, using locally sourced sand matched to Andrews Bowen’s high standards. Riders also have access to state-of-the-art under-surface watering systems Ebb & Flow which ensure uniform moisture levels for a consistent, high-performance surface.
